In 1954 a psychologist by the name of Julian Rotter developed a construct called “Locus of Control.”  This very simple but powerful concept describes people along a continuum with “internality” on one end and “externality” on the other. Internals are people who believe that they have internal control over their lives - they are responsible for their actions and for the consequences of those actions. They believe that they can and do influence those outcomes and their lives. Externals believe that the external world - fate - is in charge and they are relatively powerless.
